The activity of human phosphoglycerate mutase requires the cofactor 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (dPGM), whereas a structurally unrelated isozyme found in many parasitic species functions without a cofactor (iPGM). This variation in mechanism and evolutionary origin presents a potential drug target for selectively inhibiting glycolysis in pathogenic organisms. Specifically, they have shown promise in fighting filarial diseases such as those caused by Brugia malayi, Onchocerca volvulus, and Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm).
